Daniel Dennett

Tufts philosopher who explained consciousness as the brain’s work

There is no inner theatre where experience comes together; consciousness is many parallel processes in the brain, and the sense of an extra “hard problem” is a powerful illusion. Evolution by natural selection explains design without a designer.

Life and thought

Daniel Dennett (1942–2024) studied philosophy at Harvard, where Quine drew him into the subject, and wrote his doctorate at Oxford under Gilbert Ryle. From 1971 he taught at Tufts University, co-directing its Center for Cognitive Studies, and he worked closely with researchers in artificial intelligence, psychology and biology. A tireless writer for general readers and one of the “Four Horsemen” of the new atheism, he died in April 2024.

Dennett argued that there is no “Cartesian theatre” in the brain where experience comes together for an inner viewer. Instead, many parallel processes produce “multiple drafts”, and what we call consciousness is whichever drafts win influence over memory and speech. The feeling that something more remains to be explained, the “hard problem”, is in his view a kind of user illusion. He also explained talk of beliefs and desires as an “intentional stance”, a strategy for predicting behaviour, and in Darwin’s Dangerous Idea (1995) he described natural selection as a mindless algorithm that produces design without a designer.
